Nightwater Guide

Production Machines and Storage Units in Nightwater

Nightwater has over 60 buildings across floating biomes. Assemblers, harvesters, and storage boxes can be connected into automated networks.

Structural Relocation and Building Caps

Nightwater allows you to deploy structures without an arbitrary construction cap. Players choose from 60+ buildings across progression tiers, starting with sticks and stones before reaching the Bronze Age and the Industrial Era. When reconfiguring an island base layout, any machine can be picked up or deconstructed immediately.

Players can move or deconstruct machines at any time without losing items. Production chains expand across the island as new biomes are manifested, allowing bases to evolve from simple sticks and stones into an industrial factory as technology progresses.

Assembler Operations and Component Crafting

Automated fabrication relies on production stations like the primitive assembler. Processing components in these stations requires hitting gathering milestones across the island biomes. For instance, creating a primitive gearbox demands 600 oak wood before the recipe registers inside the fabrication interface.

In playtest and demo builds, some players documented a bug where gathering 937 oak wood still left the primitive gearbox grayed out inside the primitive assembler; no confirmed fix is documented yet. Separately, Studio Ashty confirmed that a new start is required for the full release because parts of the early game have been replaced. Later eras expand processing beyond primitive tools into modern machines and late-game buildings.

Automated Extractors and Biome Harvesters

Automating resource collection removes the need for manual foraging. Units like farmers and crushers harvest natural deposits continuously across distinct environments. In the demo preview of the Mountains biome, players tested automated collection on coal and tin nodes.

Community reports noted that harvesting counters sometimes stalled at 1 coal despite manual extraction or placing a crusher over the node, because milestone progression remained locked during that preview. Within the Harvester interface, playtesters also observed visual jittering where the first resource label shook inside the farmed resource list.

Automated units run unattended while you explore surrounding sectors. They route raw yields directly into local storage or processing chains.

Conveyance Pipes and Container IO Ports

Moving raw output from collection points to assemblers requires physical conduit connections. Pipes connect harvesters, fabricators, and storage units to create continuous production loops across your territory.

Following the March 9, 2026 playtest update, Studio Ashty confirmed that all boxes will have inputs and outputs in the next version. Connecting pipes directly between containers and processing machines removes the need to manually haul bulk goods across the island.

External Fabrication Unlocks from Minigames

Progression outside the primary building grid incorporates five minigames. Entering these side modes unlocks machinery and blueprints that count toward the 100+ total buildings, crafts, and buffs in the full game.

In the demo, the Dark Thicket minigame is a self-contained loop where progression unlocks new buildings, crafts, and buffs that boost factory efficiency outside the minigame. Players who completely deforested Dark Thicket during demo tests noted that it offered no immediate Steam achievement, though minigame upgrades apply to factory efficiency.

These secondary loops are optional. Players can reach the Lighthouse story objectives purely through standard factory expansion on the overworld.

Building Placement Rules and Interface Controls

Opening the architectural interface defaults to the B letter input on standard keyboards. During demo feedback, players on gamepads reported confusion when prompts instructed them to press B, mistaking the keyboard prompt for a controller button. Studio Ashty confirmed controller mappings and menu navigation would be completely reworked for the 1.0 release.

Demo testing also revealed strict placement range limits: structures could only be placed immediately in front of the character model rather than across open ground. Community members requested grid snapping and wider field-of-view adjustments to help organize complex layouts before the 10 GB full installation launches on Windows.
