Demo vs Full Release: What Changes

The Nightwater demo has been live since May 8, 2026, and the full game launched September 18, 2026. This guide compares the two based on developer posts and community feedback, including save transfer details.

Demo availability and scope

The demo was released on May 8, 2026, and remained available after Steam Next Fest ended in June 2026. The developer stated it contains the full first biome, called The Woods, with all milestone items and unlocks. It also includes the first minigame, Dark Thicket, with its complete progression and unlocks. A preview of the Mountains biome and its minigame is present, but milestone items cannot be unlocked there.

According to the developer, the demo takes about one hour to reach its end, or around four hours if you explore everything. Community reports from the playtest phase mention roughly 60 to 90 minutes of content to the end of what was available then, with about four hours total for full exploration. The full release is a separate product and does not include the demo's limitations.

What the full release adds

The full release, version 1.0.10, launched on September 18, 2026, and includes the complete game with 40 achievements. The developer's announcement on that day simply said the game is now officially out. The full release contains all biomes, resources, buildings, and the full story with four endings and secret areas, as described on the Steam store page.

The store page lists 20+ resources, 100+ buildings, crafts, and buffs, and 60+ buildings for automation. Five minigames are present in the full game, each with its own progression and unlocks. The demo only offered the first minigame in full and a preview of the second. The full release also includes the complete technology progression from sticks and stones to the Industrial Era and beyond.

Save transfer from demo to full release

As of the full release, there is no official statement confirming that demo save data carries over. One player review with 14 hours played explicitly wished that demo saves could be ported to the full release, implying that this was not possible at the time. The developer has not addressed save transfer in any of the posted patch notes or announcements.

If you are concerned about losing progress, you may want to start the full game fresh rather than relying on demo saves. The demo is still available on Steam, so you can try it separately. The full release uses Steam Cloud, which syncs saves for the full game, but that does not affect demo data.

Differences in content and features

The demo was described as a condensed early-game experience, while the full release is the complete product. The demo included The Woods biome and Dark Thicket minigame fully, plus a sneak peek at Mountains. The full release includes all biomes and minigames, as well as the full story and all endings.

Community feedback from the full release indicates some differences from the demo. One player noted that existing buildings or pipes cannot be upgraded to higher tiers; instead, they must be removed and replaced. Another mentioned that when you pick up processed materials, they do not count toward harvesting milestones—only the original ores do. These issues may or may not have been present in the demo, but they are reported in the full version.

Controller support changes

Controller support was a point of feedback during the playtest. The developer said in a forum reply that they would rework controller support before the full release, thanking the player for the feedback. However, after launch, multiple players reported that controller support remains incomplete.

One player with 1 hour played said the tutorials still showed keyboard and mouse prompts, and another with 7 hours said controller support works but needs more love. A player with 0.5 hours quit after 3 minutes because the on-screen prompt said to press B, but it was the keyboard B, not the controller button. The store page lists full controller support, but the current state is that some actions still require a keyboard.

Bug fixes and patches

Version 1.0.10, released on the same day as the full game, included minor fixes. The patch notes mention fixing Oasis Minigame spelling and icons, fixing an issue where the Primary Only Upgrade still gave Stone, and reworking the Gauntlet Data Rush part to make it easier.

No other patches have been announced. Players have reported other issues, such as harvesters not progressing milestone progression unless items are taken out of the harvester, and the iron ingot recipe not unlocking despite reaching the required amount. The developer replied to the harvester issue, saying it does count if you take items out, but no official fix has been confirmed for the iron ingot issue.

Performance and stability

Some players have experienced technical problems in the full release. One player reported a crash with a LowLevelFatalError related to shader decompression, specifically a DecompressShaderWithOodleAndExtraLogging failure. This is an Unreal Engine error, and the thread does not show a developer response or a confirmed fix.

Another player with 0.5 hours said the game froze five times in under 30 minutes, calling it unplayable. The developer has not publicly addressed these stability issues. The minimum requirements list an i5-3570, 8 GB RAM, and a GTX 1650, so if you meet those, you should be able to run the game, but crashes may still occur.
