Nightwater Buildings Guide: Automation and Pipes

Nightwater offers 60+ buildings to automate your production chain. Farmers, assemblers, and storage units can be linked with pipes. Build freely, move or deconstruct anytime without losing items.

Building Basics

Nightwater gives you over 60 buildings to automate resource gathering and crafting. The store page lists farmers, assemblers, and storage units as the main categories, plus pipes to link them. There is no cap on the number of machines you can construct. Moving or deconstructing a building returns your items, so there is no penalty for experimenting with layouts.

To place structures, press V on your keyboard. The build mode shows a banner with controls: B to exit or change building, R to rotate, and Left Shift to build multiple. The HUD also shows how many resources are nearby. Blueprints and the crafting menu open with B, and your inventory is on Tab. These hotkeys come from an official screenshot, so they may differ with controller input.

Farmers and Resource Gatherers

Farmers are one of the building types that collect resources automatically. They replace manual gathering, which is the core idea of automation in Nightwater. The game description says you can pick from over 60 structures to build farmers, assemblers, and storage units. Farmers likely work on plant or crop resources, but no official source specifies which exact resources they handle.

When a harvester or farmer collects items, those items do not count toward milestone progression until you take them out of the machine. A developer reply in the forums confirms this: you need to remove the items from the harvester for them to count. If you process them in an assembler, they are not counted. This is a common source of confusion, so check your storage and machines if milestones seem stuck.

Assemblers and Crafting

Assemblers are the buildings that automate crafting. You feed raw materials into them, and they produce crafted items automatically. The game says you can automate all resources and their crafts, so assemblers are central to scaling production.

One important limitation appears in player feedback for version 1.0.10: there is no way to upgrade an existing building or pipe to a higher tier. You have to remove the old one, including all connections, and place the better version. This applies to assemblers and pipes alike. Also, when you pick up processed materials, they do not contribute to harvesting milestones—only the raw ore, sand, or other unprocessed resource counts. So an assembler output of iron ingots will not advance the iron ore milestone.

Storage Units and Item Handling

Storage units are part of the 60+ buildings. They hold items produced by farmers and assemblers. The game description mentions storage units as a building type, but it does not list their capacity or any upgrade path.

From the playtest notes, all boxes have inputs and outputs in the current version. That means you can connect pipes to storage to move items in and out. Player reviews mention that piping can be annoying because you must travel back and forth to reach the inputs and outputs, and there is no drag-to-extend pipe tool. A common request is a way to quickly select buildings or pipes, but no such feature is documented yet.

Pipes and Connections

Pipes link farmers, assemblers, and storage units into a production chain. The game description says you can connect them with pipes and automate every stage of your manufacturing line. The exact mechanics of pipe placement are not detailed beyond the build controls.

The playtest update notes say all boxes will have inputs and outputs, and that mechanics will be better explained. In the released version, players report that pipes must be connected manually to each input and output, and there is no automatic extension. A player review suggests a QoL improvement would be to assign objects for quick selection, but that is not in the game as of version 1.0.10.

Milestone Progression and Automation

Milestones are tied to each resource. You can gather manually or use automated machinery to reach milestone targets, which unlock new structures, recipes, and enhancements. The demo showed a Milestones screen with two tabs: Milestones and Unlocks. Each resource has a progress bar, and reaching the threshold unlocks a specific item.

For example, the Simple Jetpack requires 1000 Quartz Ore, according to an official screenshot. The screen showed a progress bar at 1 / 1000. This shows that automation output does count if you collect it from the machine, but only raw resources count for their own milestones. Processed materials from assemblers do not count toward the original resource's milestone.

Known Issues and Workarounds

Several players report that copper ore mined by the primitive ore crusher does not count toward milestone goals. A developer reply in the forums says that items collected from harvesters do count, but only if you take them out. If you craft them in an assembler, they do not count. This may explain the copper ore issue, but no official source confirms a fix.

Another issue is the iron ingot recipe not unlocking after reaching the required iron ore amount. The forum thread says the recipe did not unlock after 70+ out of 70 iron ore. No developer answer is recorded for that thread. The game is released, and patch 1.0.10 fixed several issues but not these specifically. If you encounter these problems, the only documented advice is to take items out of machines manually and check your milestone screen.
