How many memories are there and where do I start?

Nightwater has 15 memories in total. They are split into 6 main story memories, 5 minigame memories, 1 ending memory, and 3 alternative ending memories. You do not have to collect them in order; any that you miss will show up as "???" in the memory table at spawn.

The first memory, called "Welcome," is given automatically when you start a new game. It appears in the spawn room. After that, the rest are found by exploring the islands and minigames. The developer's patch 1.0.13 fixed a bug where ending memories did not show in the cave table, so if you played before that update, some may have been hidden.

Unlocking the final 3 memories changes the lighthouse shown behind the main menu. This is a confirmed visual reward, but the developer has not documented any other effects.

Where are the main story memories located?

There are 6 main story memories. Each is tied to manifesting a specific island. The first, "Welcome," is automatic. The second, "Loop," appears in the middle of the first mountain island after you manifest it. The third, "Demands," is beside the central stone column on the first desert island.

The fourth, "Success," is on the Snowy Hills island, in the middle on the upper area. The fifth, "Choices," is on the far left volcano island, positioned before the group of 5 stacked shipping containers. The sixth, "Lighthouse," is directly in front of the lighthouse on the last Starlight Fields island.

All of these are found simply by walking to the indicated spot. No puzzle is required, just manifesting the correct island.

Where are the minigame memories?

The 5 minigame memories are hidden inside the optional minigames. The first, "Useless," is in Dark Thicket (forest minigame). When you enter, turn directly right and head for the boulder beside the log pile; moving into it lets you clip through and locate the memory.

The second, "More," is in The Mine (mine minigame). Reach the lowest level of the mine and excavate every corner. One wall adjacent to a corner will show faint fissures; stepping into that wall reveals the memory.

The third, "Dust," is in Oasis (desert minigame). You need to unlock the 3rd area in the Oasis, then look behind the 3rd shop. The fourth, "Contract," is in Fuel Shortage (snow minigame). Explore every part of the arena until you find a build that lets you reach it. The fifth minigame memory, in Data Rush, is not fully documented in the community guide; the guide stops mid-solution, so the exact location is unconfirmed. Players report it is likely on the 4th speed run, but no official source confirms the exact spot.

How do I get the ending and alternative ending memories?

The ending memory and 3 alternative ending memories are tied to finishing the game. The community guide lists them as a group, but does not give explicit locations. The developer confirmed in patch 1.0.13 that endings now show in the cave table, meaning they were previously invisible due to a bug.

To see all of them, you need to reach the Lighthouse and uncover the story. The game has four endings total, and the memories appear to correspond to those endings. The guide says unlocking the final 3 memories changes the lighthouse in the main menu background.

No official source lists the exact conditions for each alternative ending. Players on the forum have reported finding some memories after finishing the game, but the specifics are not documented. If you have not seen them, check the memory table after completing each ending.

Why are some memories still locked even after I finished the game?

Players on the Steam forum have reported finishing the game and getting all achievements, yet half of the memories remain locked. This was a known issue before patch 1.0.13, which fixed a bug where endings did not show in the cave table. If you finished before that patch, the ending memories may have been invisible.

After the patch, the memories should appear once you complete the corresponding ending. However, the community guide notes that you do not need to collect memories in order; missing ones show as "???" and can be collected later.

If you still have locked memories after the patch, check the locations listed above. The minigame memories, especially the one in Data Rush, may be the culprit because its location is not fully documented. No confirmed fix exists for any remaining issue beyond the patch.

Is there a trick to finding the hidden minigame memories?

Yes, several minigame memories require you to walk into walls or rocks that look solid. In Dark Thicket, phase through the rock to the right of the log stack. In The Mine, walk into a wall with dark cracks at the bottom. In Oasis, you need to unlock the 3rd area first.

The Fuel Shortage memory requires you to explore every part of the arena, but the guide does not specify the exact build or location. The Data Rush memory is the least documented; the guide says to look for out-of-place rocks during the 4th speed run, but stops there.

Players report that holding E on glowing purple icons works for boons, but memories do not use that mechanic. For memories, you simply walk into the correct surface. If a spot does not work, try approaching from a different angle or after completing the minigame's progression.
