Nightwater Guide

Story and Endings: Finding the Four Endings

Nightwater's story is optional but hidden. You must search for clues, read between the lines, and explore secret areas to see all four endings. This walkthrough follows the phases you will likely encounter.

Starting Point: The Island and the Lighthouse

The game begins on a lone isle adrift in a starlit sea of liquid void, encircled by unscalable peaks. The Lighthouse dominates the scene. The Steam description states that every action you take is aimed at one goal: reaching the Lighthouse and discovering its secrets. The story is never handed to you. You must find hidden secrets, interpret subtle hints, and piece together clues to learn what Nightwater truly is.

From the start, pay attention to your surroundings. The overworld will have more interactables as of the March 2026 playtest update. The game's four endings are only available to players who seek the truth about Nightwater and the Lighthouse. There is no requirement to engage with the story to finish the game, but skipping it means missing the endings.

Early Progression: Gathering and the First Clues

Your first hours involve gathering sticks, stones, and fiber by hand. The milestone system tracks each resource. As you collect, you will discover new items and buildings. The story clues are not in the milestone UI itself, but the environment holds secrets. The official screenshot shows a Milestones screen with two tabs: Milestones and Unlocks. That screen is for progression, not narrative.

Look for anything unusual in the first biome, The Woods. The demo allowed full exploration of that biome. The developer mentioned that the overworld has more interactables, which likely includes story-related objects. Read any text you find. The story is described as deep and personal, but it is not handed to you. You must actively seek it.

Biome Expansion and the Manifestation of New Areas

As you progress through the ages, you expand the island by bringing new biomes into existence. Each biome has its own resources and secrets to unveil. The Steam page lists 20+ resources across multiple biomes. The demo gave a sneak peek at the Mountains biome, but you could not unlock its milestone items there. In the full release, you can access all biomes.

Each new biome likely contains story clues. The game's description says you must expand the island to discover new biomes. The secret of the Lighthouse is tied to these biomes. The game's story is fully optional, so you can ignore it, but the endings require finding clues. Explore every corner of each biome. Look for interactable objects that are not part of the normal resource gathering. The developer's notes from the playtest mention more interactables in the overworld, so expect them to be meaningful.

Minigames and Their Hidden Connections

There are five unique minigames, each with its own gameplay loop, items, upgrades, and progression. They unlock new buildings, crafts, and buffs. The minigames are optional but offer powerful rewards. The first minigame is Dark Thicket, available in the demo. The Oasis Minigame appears in the full release, as the 1.0.10 patch fixed its spelling and icons.

Minigames may contain story elements. The Fuel Shortage minigame is described as the first without meta progression, and it feels RNG-heavy. The Mining Minigame has Dusk Gold and power buffs. The developer has not confirmed that minigames contain story clues, but the game's description says minigames unlock buildings and buffs you can use outside. Their connection to the Lighthouse is unclear. Still, completing them may be necessary for certain endings, as they are part of the game's content.

The Iron Ingot Recipe and Milestone Progression

A player reported that the iron ingot recipe did not unlock once the iron ore target was met (70+ / 70). The developer did not respond in that thread. Another player reported that harvesters do not progress milestone progression, but a reply clarified that items collected by harvesters do count if you take them out of the harvester. Crafting in an assembler does not count.

This matters for story progression because milestones unlock new buildings and crafts, which may be required to access secret areas. The Simple Jetpack requires 1000 Quartz Ore, according to the official screenshot. That jetpack might help you reach hidden areas. The milestone system is the main progression driver, so collect resources manually or from harvesters to trigger unlocks. If a recipe does not unlock, no confirmed fix is documented yet.

Late Game: Automation and the Path to the Lighthouse

As you reach the Industrial Era and beyond, you will automate production chains. The game encourages building machines to do the work. You have the freedom to construct any number of machines and relocate or dismantle them without losing any items. The late game buildings make factories faster and more efficient. This automation is necessary to produce the resources required for advanced technologies.

The path to the Lighthouse likely requires specific technologies or items. The game's description says that your journey starts with basic tools and materials, advances through the Bronze Age, reaches the Industrial Era, and eventually moves into the future. The future era may hold the key to the Lighthouse. The four endings are tied to the story, not just automation. You need to have gathered all clues along the way. The developer replied that only players who search for the truth will discover all four endings and hidden locations. So, continue exploring and reading.

Secret Areas and the Four Endings

The game has four endings. The developer explicitly states that only those who dig into the mysteries of Nightwater and the Lighthouse can see all four endings and hidden zones. The story is fully optional, and anyone can reach the end without engaging with it. That means there is a base ending that you get by just completing the main objective. The other three endings require finding hidden clues and secret areas.

Secret areas are not documented in official sources. The demo showed a preview of the Mountains biome, but no secret areas were described. The game's description mentions that you will uncover many secrets as you play. The developer's playtest update mentioned more interactables in the overworld, which could be secret areas. There is no guide yet on how to find them. You will need to explore thoroughly and pay attention to anything that seems out of place.

Endings and Save Data Considerations

After reaching the end, you may want to see all four endings. The game has Steam Cloud and Save Anytime features, so you can save before the final decision or sequence. However, no official source specifies whether the endings are mutually exclusive or if you can reload. One player review mentioned that the ending was a little underwhelming, but that is subjective.

There is no confirmed method to see all endings in one playthrough. The demo save data did not carry over to the full release, according to a player review. That might be relevant if you played the demo and want to continue. The full release has 40 achievements, which may include achievements for each ending. The game's Steam page lists achievements, but the list is not provided. If you want to see all endings, you may need to replay or load earlier saves.
